INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Brittany Bowen scored a career-high 26 points to lead four players in double figures as the Butler women's basketball team defeated Saint Louis, 69-62, Wednesday evening. Freshman Sarah Hamm and senior Alyssa Pittman scored 11 each and senior Chloe Hamilton added 10.
"I felt our girls responded from last week's loss, and the effort was there," head coach Beth Couture said. "We still made some mistakes, but when you play hard you can make up for that. And that's what we did.
"This was a game where we could get better. Now if we can get healthy, we can be a little deeper. But I'm really proud of our girls."
Bowen, a preseason All-Horizon League pick, had an efficient scoring night. She shot 8-for-12 from the floor and made all eight of her free throws. She also made two 3-pointers. In two games this season, Bowen is 14-for-14 from the foul line.
Hamm, a 6-2 post player making her first career start, scored her 11 on 5-of-9 shooting and she blocked three shots.
Tied with the Billikens 31-31 after 20 minutes, the Bulldogs shot 50 percent in the second half and controlled most of the final period. BU had its largest lead at 56-47 with 7:46 remaining, but SLU answered to pull within 57-56 late in the game. Two buckets by Bowen and a lay-up by Hamilton pushed the lead to 63-56 and Butler would maintain a two-possession lead for the remainder of the night.
Saint Louis (1-2) was led by Lauren Woods' 16 points. SLU's Kathryn Hester had 13 points and 13 rebounds. SLU did control the glass, out-rebounding Butler 41-27. However, the Billikens made 19 turnovers and shot just 33 percent in the second half.
BU (1-1) will host Division II school Ohio Dominican Saturday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
