The Butler women's basketball team was slated No. 22 in CollegeInsider's inaugural mid-major Top 25 poll released on its website. The Bulldogs received 165 points in the poll, which consists of 31 head women's basketball coaches.
The Bulldogs, who posted a 23-10 record en route to runner-up in the Horizon League last season, were ranked just behind Western Kentucky (21-11) and just ahead of Gardner-Webb (28-5). Gonzaga (29-5) was the poll's top team and received 12 first-place votes, followed by Horizon League favorite Green Bay. James Madison and Arkansas-Little Rock were third and fourth in the poll, respectively, while upcoming opponent Bowling Green rounded out the top five.
The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast. BU head coach Beth Couture and Detroit coach Autumn Rademacher are on the voting panel.
Butler opens the 2010-11 season Sunday, Nov. 7 in an exhibition against Hillsdale at 2 p.m. The regular season opener is Saturday, Nov. 13 at Bradley.
