Bulldogs Lose Season Opener vs. UNLV

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Butler women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 62-39 loss to UNLV at Iowa's Hawkeye Challenge. Sophomore Mandy McDivitt led BU with 11 points.

The Bulldogs fell behind early after shooting 6-for-29 (.207) in the first half. UNLV led 33-16 at halftime. Butler was better in the second half but couldn't keep up with the Rebels, who were led by Sandrine Nzeukou's 21 points and 15 rebounds. 

Freshman Hannah Douglas led Butler with six rebounds. She also had three assists. Senior Terra Burns had eight points and two other players scored six. 

Butler had a 19-4 advantage in bench points but couldn't get anything inside. Butler shot just two free throws, missing both attempts. UNLV was 18-for-24 at the foul line, including a 9-for-10 effort by Nzeukou. Kelli Thompson, UNLV's leading scorer last year, added 16 points.

Butler will take on Harvard Sunday, Nov. 13 in the tourney's consolation game. Harvard lost 90-81 to host Iowa.
