INDIANAPOLIS - After leading Butler to a pair of conference wins over the weekend, sophomore Sarah Hamm has been named Horizon League Player of the Week. It is the second time in three weeks a Bulldog has been recognized with the distinction and the first time Hamm has been honored.
Hamm, Butler's leading scorer, averaged 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in wins over Loyola and UIC last weekend. Hamm's 1.8 blocks per game ranks first in the Horizon League.
The 6-2 Hamm scored 20 points in a 72-46 blowout win over Loyola on Thursday, then followed that with a 19-point effort in a 51-48 victory over UIC.
With Hamm's help, Butler (12-13, 8-6) has won five of its last six games, including a tightly contested 51-48 win over UIC on Saturday. The victory pulled the Bulldogs within one game of the fourth-placed Flames.
"I'm very excited for Sarah because she has been putting up great numbers since Christmas," Butler head coach Beth Couture said. "She has helped put us in a position to win basketball games and her improvement has been huge for us."
Hamm has scored in double figures in nine of the Bulldogs' 14 conference games. She is averaging 14.2 points per game against Horizon League opponents.
Butler will look to continue its winning ways this week when it travels to Wisconsin to take on Milwaukee and nationally-ranked Green Bay. BU plays at UWM Thursday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
