Basketball season is here. The Butler women's basketball team had its first practice of the 2011-12 season Monday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs have won at least 20 games in each of the past four seasons.
"This is always a great time of year," 10th-year head coach Beth Couture said. "I love this time of year. You're back to everyone on an equal playing field, and you can feel the competition in practice with how competitive we are."
Couture, who has led BU to a 43-24 mark and two WNITs over the past two years, has a young but exciting new team. After graduating five players last year, BU has three seniors in Devin Brierly, Terra Burns and Kaley May to go with two juniors and three sophomores. Five new faces (freshmen Hannah Douglas, Haley Howard, Jessika Lark and Amanda Raker as well as transfer Daress McClung) join the returning Bulldogs.
"Our team chemistry is great, and that can get you a long way even if you are young," Brierly said. "I think our younger kids and our older kids are going to work as hard as they can to do what we can to win."
The Bulldogs (20-14 last season) took the floor with passing drills and then ran fast break offenses. Later, the team divided into three groups for half-court drills. Brierly said it was great to get on the floor with her teammates again after a fall of running and working out individually.
"We can in here and work on offense and defense, we do everything," the senior guard said. "It's nice to come in and put those things together, and just play really."
