INDIANAPOLIS - Butler's three transfers - Daress McClung, Liz Stratman and Taylor Schippers - combined for 43 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Butler women's basketball team to a 67-58 win at IUPUI on Tuesday night.
McClung, this week's A-10 player of the week, led BU with 15 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three blocks. Stratman and Schippers each scored 14 points, with Schippers pouring in 13 in the second half. Stratman had nine rebounds and five blocks in what marked her second game as a Bulldog.
IUPUI's frantic fast-paced pressure forced a fast tempo. The two teams combined for 53 turnovers. The Bulldogs pounded the Jaguars in the paint, getting to the foul line 31 times and only shooting just eight 3-pointers. Butler had 32 points in the paint.
Schippers keyed the game's most important stretch in the second half. The Butler point guard scored eight points during a 10-0 run midway through the second half that gave Butler a 52-42 lead. The game was tied 42-42 when Schippers hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key. She then added a mid-range jumper and a deep trey during the game's decisive run. IUPUI went 5:37 without scoring during that Butler run.
IUPUI made things interesting down the stretch with ball pressure. The Bulldogs committed a season-high 26 turnovers and after Butler's run the Jaguars got as close as 52-48 with exactly 6:00 on the clock.
Another key to the second half was BU taking away IUPUI's Goss. She scored all 11 of her points in the first half and finished the second period just 0-for-2 shooting. Katie Comello led IUPUI with 12 points.
Butler led most of the first half, but back-to-back 3-pointers by IUPUI moved the Jaguars ahead 26-24. The two teams traded baskets and IUPUI would take a 32-31 lead at halftime.
Butler (6-5) will return home to host Indiana State Saturday, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m.
