INDIANAPOLIS - Richmond shot better than 60 percent in the first half to build a big lead and cruise past the Butler women's basketball team 68-44 on Saturday.
Richmond (15-13, 5-7) shot 17-for-28 in the first half and used a couple big runs to break the game open. BU's last lead of the day was 11-10 when a 14-5 Richmond spurt put the Spiders ahead 24-16. Later, UR led 30-18 and went on a 13-3 run to lead 43-21 at halftime.
Butler (16-11, 7-5) played full-court defense in the second half to try and get back into the game. After the Spiders built a 52-31 lead, Butler got a 7-0 run keyed by four points my McClung and a 3-pointer by junior Mandy McDivitt. With Richmond's lead down to 14, Butler had a prime chance to make a run. However, neither team scored for a span of 3:20 and BU couldn't cut into the lead.
Richmond extended the lead back to 61-40 with 3:47 on the clock. The final margin was UR's largest lead of the game.
The Bulldogs finished with .314 shooting on the day, including .286 shooting in the second half. Rebounding and points in the paint were even, but Richmond had a 20-3 advantage in points off turnovers.
Butler has just one home game remaining. BU hosts Temple Wednesday, Feb. 23. The game is Senior Day for Becca Bornhorst and manager Evan Eichhorn.
