INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's basketball program has added Ijeoma Uchendu (pronounced I-zhay-oma U-chen-du), a 6-2 wing from Surulere, Nigeria.
Uchendu joins the Butler program by way of Central Arizona College, where she played the 2012-13 season. Uchendu posted averages of 15.7 points and 9.8 rebounds for CAC, which was NJCAA national runner-up in 2013. Her team went 32-2 and went 20-0 in conference play. Uchendu shot .494 from the floor, including .362 from 3-point range, and had eight games with 20 or more points.
She played the 2010-11 season at Grayson College, averaging 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. She missed the 2011-12 season due to injury.
"Ijeoma is the type of player that we absolutely need to compete for a Big East championship," head coach Beth Couture said. Her athleticism and skill set are going to help us on the perimeter and her ability to rebound the basketball will benefit us greatly. I am so excited she has chosen us to be a part of her American family."
The 6-2 Uchendu was ranked No. 3 overall nationally among junior college prospects for NJCAA Division I, according to girlsbasketballreport.
