Jan. 6, 2007
Dayton, Ohio - Four Butler players registered double-figure point totals, but Wright State forced 22 turnovers and used a decisive edge in rebounding to hold of the Bulldogs, 76-71, at the Nutter Center on Saturday (Jan. 6).
The Bulldogs (5-9, 2-1 Horizon League) kept the contest close for the majority of the game but were unable to get the defensive stop when they needed it most.
After trailing 13-7early in the first, Butler used a 14-5 run to go ahead by its largest lead of the game at 21-18. A three-pointer from Susan Lester brought the Bulldogs to within one before Jackie Closser netted three the old fashioned way and Ellen Hamilton split a pair of free throws to push Butler ahead by three.
Wright State (4-10, 1-2) responded in the ensuing minutes, however, scoring nine unanswered before taking a 30-25 lead into the locker room.
Cassie Freeman got things going for Butler early in the second stanza, scoring the Bulldogs' first seven points of the half, before Lade Akande added a lay-up to close the score to within one at 35-34. Wright State countered with a run of their own and carried a seven-point lead with just under 12 minutes to play.
Lester brought the Bulldogs right back in the next two minutes, tallying 10-straight points to bring Butler back to within two before Candyce Brown converted a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 55-55 with 9:43 remaining.
Once again, the Raiders had an answer, scoring seven unanswered to go up 62-55 and maintaining at least a four-point differential for the remainder of the game.
Lester led the Bulldogs with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a pair of threes. Closser added 13 points, while Freeman (11) and Akande (10) chipped in double-digit totals.
Cold shooting from beyond the arc hindered the Bulldogs throughout the contest, as Butler shot a season-low 20 percent (5-of-24) for three. Meanwhile, each team committed 22 turnovers in the contest.
Butler returns to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Thursday (Jan. 11) when the Bulldogs take on UIC in the Horizon League home opener beginning at 7:00 p.m.
