Jan. 7, 2003
DETROIT -Detroit's Caitie Goddard scored seven points in overtime to lead the Titans to an 84-79 overtime win against Butler on Tuesday evening in Calihan Hall. Goddard had scored only two points prior to overtime, but hit a three-pointer and went four-for-four from the line to lift Detroit to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League action. Butler, which failed to score a field goal in overtime, dropped to 3-9, and 1-1 against league foes.
Cortney Urquhart led Butler with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Nancy Bowden added 14 points, including a 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line. Freshman Stephanie Boeke scored 13 points and classmate Jessica Monaco chipped in 11 points off the bench, both of which were season-highs for the rookies. Junior Dionne Goodwin rounded out Butler's scoring with a season-high10 points.
"I'm proud of our effort tonight," said head coach Beth Couture. "We went down 11 late in the game, but we fought hard to get back in it. I don't want to count on moral victories, but this was a good outing for us even though the final score might not show it."
Detroit pulled out to a quick 13-5 lead, as it took Butler until the 13:30 mark to score its first field goal. But, Monaco and Boeke helped the Bulldogs get back into it, scoring 17 of the team's 22 points. Boeke's three-pointer at 8:29 gave Butler it's first lead of the game at 22-21. The two teams alternated buckets on the next several minutes before a Lisa Pryor jumper followed by another Boeke shot from long range gave Butler it's biggest lead of the game at 38-33 with under a minute remaining.
But, Detroit's Sara Crum quickly countered with a layup on the next possession to pull her team within 38-35 with 15 second remaining. The Titans managed to steal the inbounds pass and Elizabeth Kryzek connected on a baseline shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 38 heading into halftime.
Butler held a 47-43 lead in the early minutes of the second half, but a 11-4 Titan run, capped off by a three-point play by Crum, pushed the hosts ahead 54-51. Detroit took advantage of several Butler turnovers and solid shooting from the free throw line to go ahead 67-56 with 8:17 remaining, but the Bulldogs went on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 72-71 lead.
Detroit tied the game at 72 when Katie Solner hit the tail-end of a two-shot foul, but Urquhart's jumper followed by a free throw from Angel Mason put Butler back on top, 75-72. A layup by Goddard with 1:34 left in regulation pulled the Titans to within one, and Nicole Anaejionu's free throw tied the game 75 at 1:03. Each team had several chances to win it in regulation, but neither squad was able to get a good shot off in the final minute.
Crum led the Titans with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Anaejionu added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Kryzek (15) and Harakas (13) also scored in double-figures.
Butler shot 39 percent from the field on the game, but was 43 percent from long range. The Titans, which held a slim 43-41 rebounding edge, shot 48.5 percent from the field.
Butler travels to Horizon League foe Loyola on Thursday (Jan. 9) to take on the Ramblers in an 8 p.m. meeting
