Butler Drops 75-66 Decision To Cleveland State

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to claim a 75-66 Horizon League victory over the Butler women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Arena. The Vikings improve to 6-13 overall and 4-5 in league action while the Bulldogs drop to 4-15 and 2-7 in the league.
Angel Mason recorded her second straight double-double to lead the Bulldogs, finishing with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Cortney Urquhart also recorded 16 points and Lisa Pryor added 14. Junior point guard Nancy Bowden came up one assist shy of a career-high, as she dished out 11 assists on the game, to go along with her seven points and six rebounds.
Ashley Schrock's three-pointer at 15:00 broke a 9-9 tie. The Vikings continued to roll from there, going on an 18-4 run over the next eleven minutes to pull ahead 30-13. But, the Bulldogs answered with a 12-2 run of their own as they went into the locker room down only 32-25.
Schrock led Cleveland State with nine first half points, and Lisa Pryor paced Butler, which shot just 29.4 percent on the half, with nine points of her own.
Butler struck first in the second half, and closed to within two, 36-34, off of Pryor's layup at 16:37. The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the deficit, and finally got over the hump when Urquhart's offensive putback gave her team a 39-38 edge.
The two teams alternated leads seven times over the next six minutes, as Butler held a slim 51-49 lead heading into the final ten minutes of the game. Cleveland State then went on a 14-0 run, capped off by back-to-back baskets from Shannon Sword to take a commanding 63-51 advantage with 7:27 left to play.
The Vikings lead grew to as much as 14, 71-57, when Erika Roudebush knocked down a deep three-pointer with 4:40 remaining. A pair of Urquhart free throws brought Butler to within 73-65, but the Bulldogs could get no closer in the final minutes.
Mandy Sichting led the Vikings with 14 points off the bench. Schrock recorded 13 points, Roudebush finished with 12 and Sword added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Butler, which held a 45-42 rebounding edge over Cleveland State, shot 36.2 percent on the game, while the Vikings were 44.1 percent from the field.
Butler will continue on its three-game road trek on Monday when the Bulldogs take on Western Kentucky in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
