Cleveland State Escapes With 79-71 Victory Over Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Cleveland State rebounded from a nine-point late second half deficit to defeat the Butler women's basketball team 79-71 on Saturday (Feb. 2) at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The loss extends the Bulldogs' losing streak to 15 games, as Butler falls to 1-21 overall and 0-11 in league play. The Vikings (9-11), who have won their last three outings, improve to 4-6 in the Horizon League.
The Bulldogs increased their five-point (39-35) halftime lead to 10 early on in the second stanza. But, and 8-0 run by the Vikings would cut the advantage to 48-46 with 13:48 remaining. A jumper by Cortney Urquhart at 6:27 would cap off an 8-0 Butler run and push the Bulldogs' lead back up to 66-57.
CSU's defensive pressure then took over, as the Vikings forced Butler into five turnovers and held the Bulldogs scoreless over the next four minutes. During that time period, Cleveland State went on a 12-0 run, sparked by Ashley Schrock's seven consecutive points, and took a 70-66 lead.
A three-pointer by Maria Marchesano and a basket by Sarah Bolten would give Butler its final lead (71-70) with two minutes left to play. But, Butler foul trouble proved to be a factor as the Vikings would capitalize on their numerous trips to the free throw line in the game's final minutes.
Cleveland State shot 40.7 percent on the game, while the Bulldogs posted a 45.8 percent clip. CSU outrebounded Butler 41-31, including 13 to 4 on the offensive glass.
Erika Roudebush finished with a game-high 21 points for the Vikings and Schrock and Karyn Woloszynek poured in 17 and 15 points, respectively. CSU's Shannon Sword narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Butler was led in scoring by Nancy Bowden's 15 points. Teammates Angel Mason and Tiffany Smith each tallied 12 points and Marchesano finished with 11. Bolten led all players in rebounding with 12 boards.
Butler will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 7) at UW-Green Bay. Game time against the league-leading Phoenix is slated for 8 p.m.
