Feb. 28, 2002

Box Score

UW-Green Bay outscored the Butler women's basketball team 38-15 in the first half en route to a 65-43 victory in the Horizon League quarterfinals on Thursday (Feb. 28) at Loyola's Joseph J. Gentile Center. The loss concludes the Bulldogs (3-26) season, while the top-seeded Phoenix (22-6) advance to the Tournament's semifinal round.

The Phoenix limited Butler to just four field goals and 15.4 percent shooting from the field to take an early first half lead. UW-Green Bay would then use a late 15-0 run to go into halftime up 38-15.

"Green Bay is a really steady team," said head coach Wendy Gatlin. "They enter the game with a different level of mentality and intensity."

Despite outscoring the Phoenix 28-27 in the second half, Butler had dug itself too deep of a hole, and could not overcome the large first half deficit. The Bulldogs ended the game shooting 25.9 percent (14-54) from the field.

UW-Green Bay held a 41-35 rebounding edge on the Bulldogs, and shot a 47.4 percent clip from the field on the game.

First team all-league selection, Mandy Stowe, led the Phoenix with 14 points. Chandra Johnson poured in 11 points off the bench and Sara Boyer chipped in 10 points. Elizabeth Dudley narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds and eight assists on the game.

"They (Green Bay) can go six or seven people deep and not miss a beat," said Gatlin. "That's a sign of a successful and experienced team."

Freshman Maria Marchesano, who was named to the league's all-newcomer team, was the lone Bulldog to score in double figures, finishing the game with 15 points, all of which came from behind the arc. Cortney Urquhart led all players with 12 rebounds and Nancy Bowden, who was named to the league's all-defensive team, finished with seven points and four assists.
