Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler nailed a season-high 10 three-pointers on the night and played stifling defense down the stretch as the Bulldogs overcame a nine-point, second-half deficit to claim a gutsy, 58-53, victory over visiting IUPUI at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening.
Trailing 45-36 with 9:32 remaining in the second half, the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes. After Candace Bain got things rolling with a jumper from the right side, Ellen Hamilton and Cassie Freeman went back-to-back from beyond the arc to cut the lead to one before Hamilton netted her fourth trey of the night with 5:44 remaining to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead.
Butler (2-4) worked out to a four-point advantage and held a 53-49 lead with 2:21 remaining, but IUPUI (4-2) would not go away, as the Jaguars cut the deficit in half on a lay-up by Julia Whitted with just over a minute to go. Candace Jones would all but seal the game for the Bulldogs just over 20 seconds later, as Jackie Closser found the sophomore guard out on the right corner, who netted the Bulldogs' 10th triple of the night to put Butler up by five with a minute to play.
IUPUI attempted to force overtime, trimming the lead to three with 48 seconds on the clock, but a game-tying three-point attempt by Alicia Booyer with three ticks remaining missed its mark and gave the Bulldogs their second victory of the season and end a mild three-game winless skid.
The two teams battled through a scrappy opening half, trading the lead 13 times in the first 20 minutes alone, all the way down to the final second in the stanza.
With the Bulldogs leading, 27-26 with under a minute remaining, Booyer hit a triple to put the Jaguars on top with 48 seconds on the clock. After Freeman split a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one, Jones nailed a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give Butler its first halftime lead of the season at 31-29.
Hamilton paced all scorers with 16 points in the game, going 4-of-8 from three and 6-of-11 from the field. Jones finished with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including three treys, and added six rebounds. Freeman added nine points and six boards.
Sophomore Candyce Brown came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs with seven rebounds on the night and hit both of her free throws with 1.6 seconds left in the game to ice the win.
A three-pointer by Closser just a minute into the contest gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the night and extended the senior guard's three-point streak to 34 games, dating back to the 2005-06 season opener.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (Dec. 2) when they host Ball State in the second game of the State Farm Hoosier Classic beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Valparaiso will take on Indiana State beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the first contest.
