March 9, 2009
Indianapolis, Ind. - After concluding a break-out regular season in which she ranked in among the best in the Horizon League in steals, blocks and defensive rebounds, Butler junior forward Melanie Thornton was named to the conference's All-Defensive Team. The league office made the announcement on Sunday (March 8).
The Carmel, Ind., native wrapped up a 2008-09 campaign in which she ranked second in the league with 5.3 defensive rebounds per game, third with 1.2 blocked shots per contest and sixth with 2.3 steals per game. Her 7.3 rebounds, 67 steals and 36 blocks lead the squad, while her 10.1 points are the fourth-most.
"We're really proud of Mel and what she has accomplished this season," head coach Beth Couture said. "Her defense has really been vital to our success throughout the year, but her post presence on both sides of the ball has been outstanding and is a testament to how hard she has worked in the off season."
Thornton has put together the most impressive season of her career at Butler in 2008-09, totaling 293 points, 212 rebounds and 67 steals in 29 games played compared to the 176 points, 141 rebounds and 21 steals she recorded in the combined 55 games during her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Butler opens up the Horizon League Championship in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (March 11) when it hosts either Milwaukee or Youngstown State beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
