INDIANAPOLIS - Eleven Butler student-athletes were among the 78 total student-athletes from across the league which were named to the 2002-03 Horizon League Winter Academic All-League Team. Butler also placed three student-athletes on the Pioneer Football League's Academic All-League team, the league offices announced.

The winter Academic All-League teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a league-sponsored sport. Senior Brandon Miller led the way as a three-time academic all-league selection. Miller recently earned the prestigious Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to an NCAA Division I men's basketball player for demonstrating outstanding character, leadership, integrity, humility, sportsmanship and talent.

Seniors Carlo Girolamo (men's swimming) and Brad Bennett (men's indoor track and field) and junior Catie Scott (women's swimming) were repeat selections, while Colleen Munro-Leighton (women's basketball), Mike Monserez (men's basketball), Brendan Van Cleve (men's swimming), Jesse Levknecht (women's swimming), Chris King (men's indoor track and field), Mary Reeves (women's indoor track and field) and Jill Snyder (women's indoor track and field) were all first-time honorees.

Sophomore Ian Nelson was named to the Academic All-PFL Offensive First Team, while juniors Ryan Brocklesby and Bob Leonard were named to the Offensive Second Team.

To be nominated for the Academic All-PFL squad, the student athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale). No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution.
