Aug. 4, 2003
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's basketball team announced the signing of Jessica Wright today. Wright, a transfer from the University of Illinois, is also a local product from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. The 6-0 guard will be eligible to play as a sophomore for the 2004-05 season.
"We are really excited to have a player like Jessica join our program," said second year head coach Beth Couture. "It is great to have a local player in our system and we look for great things from her."
Wright, who played in 18 games as a freshman for the Fighting Illini, had a standout prep career at Cathedral. There, she guided the Fighting Irish to the Class 3A championship in both 2000 and 2001. During her time at Cathedral, her teams went a combined 83-3 and won three straight city championships. Following the completion of her senior year, Wright was ranked the 28th top senior by Blue Star Report and the 45th best player in America by StudentSports.com.
Wright was named to the Indiana All-Star team as a senior and averaged 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The Butler women's basketball team returns all five starters the court this season, which will kick off on November 21 at the University of Iowa Invitational.
