Sept. 28, 2006
Indianapolis, Ind. - Senior guards Jackie Closser and Ellen Hamilton and junior forward Cassie Freeman have been named the Butler women's basketball team captains for the 2006-07 season. Head coach Beth Couture made the announcement on Thursday (Sept. 28).
Closser returns as captain after holding the role as a junior in 2005-06, while Hamilton and Freeman both were voted first-year captains by this season's players.
Closser, one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history, shattered her own single-season mark with 84 treys last year while surpassing the career record with 186 triples made. Her 3.0 three-pointers per game paced the league and was the sixth-highest total in the nation.
Hamilton was nearly as deadly from beyond the arc last year, netting 2.38 three-pointers per game for the league's second-best rate, while her 46.6 percent made from downtown was the fifth-best efficiency in the nation. Her total of 69 triples in 2005-06 ranks as the second-highest mark in school history.
Freeman added a different dimension to the Bulldog's three-point attack last season, finishing third in the league with a 45.5 three-point percentage and ranking as the only post player among the top 15 in the category. Her 30 triples was the third most on the team, while 6.5 points per game were the fourth-highest on the squad.
"I'm excited about our captains," Couture said. "They give us a good mix of personalities and different types of leaderships. We have players who lead vocally and who lead by example. I feel like each will bring positives and something unique to the table."
The Bulldogs kick off the 2006-07 season with an exhibition contest at Hinkle Fieldhouse against the Hoosier Lady Stars on Oct. 31 before beginning the regular season at Illinois on Nov. 12.
