Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler women's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League regular season this year according to the league's preseason poll, which was announced on Wednesday (Oct. 8). The Bulldogs received a total of 204 points in the poll as well as one first-place vote.
Each of the top five teams in the poll received at least one first-place nomination.
Green Bay, last year's regular season champion, was the poll's top vote getter, garnering 284 total points and 24 of the 29 first-place ballots. Wright State (241 point, 1 first place vote) edged out Milwaukee (240, 2) for second place overall, while 2008 Horizon League tournament champion Cleveland State (228, 1) checked in at fourth-place.
Valparaiso trailed the Bulldogs in sixth-place with 179 points, while UIC (97), Loyola (94), Youngstown State (71) and Detroit (41) rounded out the standings.
Butler returns 11 of 13 letterwinners and all five starters from a 2007-08 squad that finished with a 20-10 overall record. The returning players accounted for 91 percent of the team's scoring, 91 percent of its rebounding and 92 percent of its assists last season.
