Indianapolis, Ind. - For the fourth-straight season, a pair of Bulldogs have earned spots on the Preseason All-Horizon League teams, as senior center Lade Akande was named to the all-league first team and junior forward Susan Lester was tabbed to the second team. The league office made the announcement on Friday (Oct. 10).
Akande, a native of Robinson, Ill., earns mention on the preseason squads for the third-straight season, while Lester, a native of Anderson, Ind., receives the honor for the second time in as many years.
"We're really proud of both Lade and Susan," head coach Beth Couture said. "These awards are testaments to the hard work and dedication they have put forth in their careers. Both honors are very well deserved."
Akande, who became the 18th player in Butler history with 1,000 points last year, enters her senior season as the team's active leader in points (1,360), rebounds (573), blocks (111), steals (105) and minutes played (2,382). A three-time All-Horizon League honoree, she has notched 14 double-doubles in her career and is 27 rebounds shy of becoming just the fourth Butler player ever to total 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 100 blocks in her career. She finished the 2007-08 campaign ranked fourth in the league with 16.1 points per game and sixth with 6.4 rebounds per contest.
Lester brings a powerful inside game as well as a deadly outside shot. She finished last season as the league's second-best rebounder with 7.3 boards per contest and ranked in the top-10 in three-pointers made and three-point percentage. The team's second-leading active scorer and rebounder with 668 points and 418 boards, her 18 double-doubles in two seasons are the most among returning players, as are her 20 double-digit rebounding games.
The Bulldogs have had two players named to the preseason all-league squad in the past four years. Akande and Lester were tabbed to the 2007-08 preseason team following Akande and Jackie Closser in 2006-07 and Closser and Ellen Hamilton in 2005-06.
Butler kicks off the 2008-09 season on the road when the Bulldogs battle Ohio State on Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Value City Arena.
