Indianapolis, Ind. - After notching a game-high 23 points in helping the Bulldogs to a 59-58 season-opening victory over Ohio on Saturday (Nov. 10), Butler center Lade Akande was named the Horizon League's Women's Basketball Player of the Week. She is the first league player of the week this year.
A native of Robinson, Ill., Akande posted an 8-for-11 mark from the field and added a strong 7-of-9 trek from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 23 points. She also pulled in a team-high six rebounds while playing 35 minutes.
"We're really proud of Lade and how hard she has worked in the off-season to comeback and become a force for us on the floor," head coach Beth Couture said. "This honor is well deserved, not only with what her stats show but with how hard she has played in the past week."
Akande was named to the 2007 Preseason All-Horizon League First Team after averaging 14.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game during the 2006-07 season.
Butler returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 17) when they take on Nov. 23 Purdue beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Mackey Arena.
