Indianapolis, Ind. - After totaling 34 points and 17 rebounds en route to MVP honors at the University of Miami Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend, Butler center Lade Akande was named the Horizon League's Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday (Nov. 26).
Akande paved the way on the scoring front and on the boards as the Bulldogs scored a pair of wins to claim the tournament championship.
The 6-1 junior led the team with 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the field (54.5 percent), and added a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots to help the Bulldogs past Monmouth in the opening round. She followed up that performance with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting (66.7 percent), a contest-best nine boards, a block and two steals against the host Hurricanes as Butler claimed the tournament title.
The Robinson, Ill., native currently leads the team with 14.0 points per game and ranks second with 5.2 rebounds per contest. She is just 52 points shy of becoming the 19th Butler player with 1,000 points in her career.
"Lade has had a huge impact on our early season success this year," head coach Beth Couture said. "Her presence in the paint in both games this weekend not only allowed her to score but gave the rest of our team opportunities to contribute on offense. Her rebounding also really helped us out, especially late in the games when we needed it the most."
Akande receives the award for the second time this season after becoming the league's first recipient of the season just two weeks ago (Nov. 14).
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (Dec. 1) when they take on Indiana State in the State Farm Hoosier Classic beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET at the Athletics-Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Ind.
