Bulldogs Win PTSIR Golf Performance Classic
Junior Molly Fields defeated sophomore teammate
Michele Nash in a playoff to claim medalist honors
and the two co-leaders helped pace Butler to the team title at the
PTSIR Golf Performance Classic, which concluded at Lost Marsh Golf
Course in Hammond, Ind., on Tuesday (Sept. 23). The Bulldogs
led the 10-team field by seven strokes.
Fields shot a one-over-par 73 in the opening round of the 36-hole
tournament to grab the first day individual lead. But she
slipped to an 80 in the second round and wound up tied for first
with Nash, who carded rounds of 76 and 77. Fields then
birdied the first playoff hole to capture the medalist trophy.
The Bulldogs also picked up a “Top 5” individual
finish from sophomore Clare Cornelius, who shot
back-to-back rounds of 78 to finish in sole possession of fifth
place three strokes behind the leaders.
Junior Allison Lipps, who recorded one of two
eagles in the tournament, tied freshman teammate Alexandra
Arends, who was playing as a non-scoring individual, for
18th place in the final individual standings. Lipps shot an
opening-round 86 and then finished with an 80, while Arends posted
an 81 and an 85. Freshman Julia Porter
closed out Butler’s scoring team in 54th place with rounds of
92 and 104.
Butler shot a first round score of 313 to take a four stroke lead
over Loyola. The Bulldogs then stretched that margin by
out-scoring Loyola, 315-318, in the final round. Western
Illinois finished third, followed by Eastern Illinois, Detroit,
Green Bay, North Dakota, host Chicago State, Valparaiso and IPFW.
