Butler Finishes Runner-up At Ann Rhoads Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Sophomore Julia Porter finished second in
the individual competition and helped lead Butler to a runner-up
finish in the team race at the 2011 Ann Rhoads Invitational, which
concluded at Oxmoor Valley Golf Course on Monday, Feb. 28.
West Florida came from behind in the final round to edge the
Bulldogs for the title.
Porter shot a team-best 78 in the opening round on Sunday, Feb.
27, and then closed with a five-over-par 77 in the final round for
a two-day total of 155. She finished four strokes behind
medalist Emily Gibson of Montevallo.
Junior Clare Cornelius, who shot an 83 in the first round, matched
Porter’s score in the final round and finished with a 36-hole
total of 160. She placed fifth overall, two strokes behind
Bhavna Shetty of West Florida in third place and one stroke behind
West Florida’s Jenny Lines in fourth place.
Butler’s Michele Nash also posted a “Top 10”
individual finish with back-to-back rounds of 81 (162). She
tied for ninth in the final individual standings. Sophomore
Ali Arends tied for 34th with a two-day total of 177 (89-88), and
senior Molly Fields tied for 39th with a final score of 179
(86-93). Senior Marcella Moreman, playing as a non-scoring
individual, tied for 21st place with a 36-hole score of 170
(90-80).
The Bulldogs shot a 328 in the first round and held a one-stroke
lead heading into the final day. But West Florida stormed
back with a tournament-best 319 on the final day to finish three
strokes ahead of the Bulldogs, who were playing their first spring
tournament. Indianapolis placed third in the meet, 13 strokes
behind Butler.
