Butler Captures Horizon League Championship
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. -- Junior Michele Nash captured medalist honors and led Butler to the team title at the 2011 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship, which concluded at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort on Sunday (April 24). The championship was Butler's fifth in the past seven years.
Nash grabbed the individual lead with a two-under-par 71 in the second round of the 54-hole championship, and she held it with a 79 on the final day. Her three-round total of 233 was two strokes better than runner-up and 2009 champion Samantha Formeck of Youngstown State.
Nash became the fourth player in Butler women's golf history to capture Horizon League medalist honors, following Lynnsey Showers (2004 & 2005), Lauren Showers (2006) and Paige McCracken (2007). The team title was Butler's first since 2008.
The Bulldogs had three players finish in the "Top 10" in the final individual standings and four in the "Top 15." Senior Molly Fields posted a 54-hole score of 244 (83-83-78) and tied for seventh place in the final standings, while junior Clare Cornelius came in with a 246 (81-80-85) and placed ninth. Senior Marcella Moreman shot a 252 (86-83-83) and finished 15th.
Butler's fifth player was sophomore Julia Porter, who placed 30th with a three-round score of 272 (96-86-90).
Nash led the tournament in par-3 scoring (3.00), par-4 scoring (4.33) and in total pars (38). Cornelius tied for third in par-5 scoring (5.00). Porter tied for fifth in the tournament with five birdies.
Butler shot a team score of 333 in the first round and trailed both Detroit and Loyola. But the Bulldogs stormed back with a 317 in the second round to grad the tournament lead and then held on with a 325 in the final round for a winning score of 975. Defending champion Detroit finished second eight strokes back (983), while Loyola wound up third at 1000.
