Butler Women Win Third Straight Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, IND, -- Senior Michele Nash captured medalist honors in a playoff and Butler wrapped up the team championship at the Butler Fall Golf Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 4.  The team title was Butler's third in as many tournaments this fall.

Nash, who was tied for first after the first round of the tournament, shot an even par 70 in the final round to finish with a 36-hole total of two-over-par 142.  Jordan Essman of IUPUI matched Nash in both rounds, forcing a playoff for the top individual spot.

Both players hit safely off the 18th tee at Highland Golf and Country Club, and both reached the green with their second shots.  Essman left her birdie putt just short, and Nash responded by sinking a 15-foot, downhill putt for the win.  The individual title was the second straight for Nash, after a runner-up finish at the season-opening Green Bay Invitational.

All five Butler players finished among the "Top 20" individuals, including three "Top 10" finishes.  Junior Julia Porter tied for fifth with rounds of 74 and 75 (149), while freshman Isabella Lambert tied for seventh with rounds of 76 and 74 (150).  Freshman Jenna Peters followed her opening-round 73 with a 78 in the final round to tie for 12th place at 151.  Senior Clare Cornelius tied for 17th place with back-to-back rounds of 77 (154).

Sophomore Ali Restaino, playing as a non-scoring individual, wound up 24th in the final standings with rounds of 83 and 73 (156).  Her 73 was the sixth-best round recorded on the final day.  Junior Alexandra Arends tied for 34th with a final total of 160 (78-82), while freshman Megan Schaefer came in 61st at 192 (98-94).

Butler opened a five-stroke lead by shooting a team score of 295 in the opening round.  IUPUI, which trailed by 13 strokes heading into the final round, stormed back on the final day with a team score of 287, the best single round score of the tournament.  But the Bulldogs held on to the lead by shooting a team total of 296.

The Bulldogs, who now have team trophies from the Green Bay Invitational, the Valparaiso Invitational and the Butler Fall Invitational, will return to action at the MAC Preview in Indianapolis on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11.
