Butler Joins MAAC For Women’s Golf

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler has been accepted as an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for women's golf, beginning with the 2012-13 season.  The announcement completes a women's golf conference search that began this summer when Butler joined the Atlantic 10 Conference, which does not sponsor the sport.

"We're excited to be going to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference," said Butler Athletic Director Barry Collier.  "We think the competition there will be stiff and something that we're looking forward to.  The challenge of playing these teams, schools that are much like us, will fit in with Butler and Butler will fit in with them."

Last season, Butler won its second consecutive Horizon League women's golf championship and made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship.  The Bulldogs finished 23rd at the NCAA Central Regional at The Ohio State University, coming in one spot ahead of Siena College, the 12-time defending MAAC women's golf champion.  Siena became the first MAAC women's golf team to compete in the NCAA Championship with the conference's automatic bid to the tournament.

"We had an opportunity to play with one of (the MAAC's) teams, Siena, in the postseason this year, and our interaction with their student-athletes was great," said Butler golf coach Bill Mattingly.  "They're going to be tough competition, and I know they've been a perennial power in the league.  And the other teams in the league, looking at their websites as I'm sure they're checking out ours, have made some nice improvements to their rosters, so we're looking forward to joining the league."

Butler won six of the past eight Horizon League women's golf championships and made the league's only two postseason championship appearances.  The Bulldogs had five individual champions in the 10 years that the league sponsored women's golf.

The 2013 MAAC Golf Championships will be held April 26-28 at Walt Disney World's Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
