Butler, behind the strong opening round effort of freshman Claire Cornelius, stood in a tie for fifth place after the first day of the North-South Collegiate golf tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday, March 9. The two-day event will wrap up on Tuesday, March 10.
Cornelius shot a four-over-par 74 in the first round and moved into a tie for third place in the individual standings, two strokes behind individual leader Fern Grimshaw of Bethune-Cookman. The first-year Butler golfer carded identical scores on 37 on the front and back nines.
Butler also picked up a strong effort from senior Lauren Showers, who posted a 77 in the opening round. She enters the final round in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings.
Freshman Michele Nash finished the first day with an 82, which placed her in a tie for 28th, while sophomore Molly Fields posted an 85, good for a tie for 39th place. Sophomore Allison Lipps was tied for 42nd place with an 87.
Sophomore Nicole Simon, playing as a non-scoring individual, shot a 76 on the first day and was tied for eighth place.
Butler's team score of 318 left the Bulldogs in a tie with Flagler College, 15 strokes behind team leader Bethune-Cookman.
