Junior Lauren Showers grabbed the individual lead and helped lift Butler into first place in the team standings after the first day of the Horizon League Women's Golf Championship at Plum Creek Golf Course on Saturday (April 26). The 54-hole league tournament will conclude with a final 18-hole round on Sunday (April 27).
Showers opened the tournament with a four-over-par 76 in cold and windy conditions at the Carmel, Ind., golf course. Her effort gave her a two-stroke lead after 18 holes, and she held on to the top spot by carding an 80 in the afternoon round for a +12 156. She'll enter Sunday's final round with a two-stroke lead over Katie Rogner of Youngstown State and Rachel McHenry of Detroit.
The Bulldogs finished the morning round in second place behind Youngstown State, but rallied with a strong afternoon performance. Fueled by defending individual champ Paige McCracken, Butler carded a tournament-best 315 in the second round to claim a seven-stroke lead, heading into Sunday's final round. McCracken, who opened with an 88, posted the tournament's best score with a two-over-par 74 in the second round.
Senior Niki Garden shot an 81 in the opening round and then closed with an 80 for a +17 161. She finished the first day in fifth place in the individual standings. Senior Lynnsey Showers posted back-to-back rounds of 81, and she'll enter the final round in a tie for for sixth place with McCracken at +18 162. Freshman Molly Fields rounded out Butler's team with a +34 178 (91-87).
Butler shot a 326 in the first round and trailed by two strokes heading into the second round. Youngstown State finished the first day in second place with identical rounds of 324. The championship round on Sunday will begin at 8 a.m. (ET).
