Junior Lauren Showers placed runner-up for the second straight year and helped lead Butler to a fourth consecutive team title at the Horizon League Women's Golf Championship, which concluded at Plum Creek Golf Course in Carmel, Ind., on Sunday (April 27). The Bulldogs (954) finished seven strokes ahead of runner-up Youngstown State (961) in the 54-hole championship.
Showers, who held a two-stroke lead heading into the final day, shot a four-over-par 76 in the last round and wound up with a 54-hole total of 232 (+16) to finish two strokes behind medalist Katie Rogner of Youngstown State. Rogner carded an even-par 72 in the final round and finished with a three-round score of 230 (+14) to claim the come-from-behind victory. Showers, who was Horizon League medalist in 2006, tied teammate Niki Garden for second place at last year's league tournament.
Butler had four golfers place among the "Top 10" individuals at the league championship. Senior Lynnsey Showers, Lauren's older sister, carded a 76 in the final round and finished fourth with a three-round total of 238 (+22). Senior Paige McCracken, last year's tournament medalist, tied for fifth at 241 (+25), while Garden finished eighth with a final score of 243 (+27). McCracken shot a 78 on the final day, while Garden posted an 82.
Freshman Molly Fields rounded out the Butler squad with a final score of 263 (+47), good for 22nd place. Fields shot an 85 on Sunday, her best round of the tournament.
The Bulldogs held a six-stroke lead over Youngstown State heading into the final round and stretched that margin by another stroke by out-scoring the Penguins, 312-313, on the last day. Detroit came in third with a three-round score of 987, followed by Cleveland State (999), Loyola (1007) and Green Bay (1137).
Lauren and Lynnsey Showers and McCracken each were named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team following the competition. Lauren Showers and McCracken also were named to the Horizon League All-League Team.
