Senior Niki Garden tied for ninth in the final individual standings and helped Butler to a tie for fourth in the team race at the Western Illinois Autumn Invitational held in Macomb, Ill., Sunday and Monday, Sept. 16-17. Drake won the 13-team tournament played at the Harry Mussato Golf Course.
Garden turned in a strong final day performance to lead the Bulldogs. After shooting an 82 in the opening round, she carded a three-over-par 75 in the final round for a 36-hole total of 157. She finished two strokes ahead of teammate Lauren Showers, who tied for 13th with rounds of 80 and 79.
Junior Lynnsey Showers posted rounds of 80 and 81 and tied for 20th in the two-day tournament, while senior Paige McCracken shot an 83 on the first day and finished with a 79 to tie for 22nd place. Senior Amy Stafford was the fifth member of Butler's scoring team, and she posted rounds of 84 and 86 to tie for 47th place.
Head coach Bill Mattingly also entered two newcomers in the tournament as non-scoring individuals. Freshman Molly Fields tied with Stafford for 47th place with rounds of 83 and 87, while freshman Marcella Moreman tied for 55th with scores of 81 and 91.
Abbie May of Northern Illinois captured tournament medalist honors with a score of six-over-par 150 (74-76), two strokes ahead of Molly Schemm and Ann Arnason, both of Northern Iowa.
The Bulldogs will return to action at the Butler Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2. The home tournament will be held at Ironwood Golf Course.
