Senior Lauren Showers shot a final round, three-over-par 75 to capture medalist honors and Butler finished second in the final team standings at the IPFW Fall Classic women's golf tournament held at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 29-30. Chicago State came from 13 strokes down in the final round to win the team title by four strokes.
Showers was tied for fifth after shooting a 77 on the first day of the tournament. But she turned in the second-best score of the final day and passed the four golfers who were ahead of her, including teammates Michele Nash and Nicole Simon. Showers finished with an eight-over-par 152 to edge Katie Dempsey of Dayton by a single stroke for top individual honors.
Nash, who shared second place after shooting a 76 on the opening day, carded an 80 in the final round and wound up fifth in the overall standings. Simon, who was tied with Nash after the first round, withdrew in the final round.
Sophomore Molly Fields finished the two-day event in a tie for 15th place with rounds of 79 and 87 (166), while freshman Clare Cornelius tied for 22nd with rounds of 77 and 91 (168). Sophomore Allison Lipps, playing as a non-scoring individual, placed seventh with back-to-back rounds of 79 (158).
The Bulldogs shot a 306 in the first round and led Dayton in second place by 12 strokes heading into the final round. Chicago State was third after the first round with a 319. The Cougars shot a 316 on the final day and finished with a tournament-leading 635, while Butler slipped to 333 in the final round and wound up with a team total of 639. Dayton was third (646), followed by host IPFW (652), SIU-Edwardsville (664) and Green Bay (689).
Butler will return to action on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Butler Fall Invitational The two-day tournament will be held at Eagle Creek Golf Course.
