Junior Lauren Showers tied for second in the final individual standings and helped lead Butler to the team title at the Butler Fall Invitational women's golf tournament, which wrapped up at Eagle Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The Bulldogs, who shot a school-record 296 in the opening round, finished with a 306 on the final day to win the five-team tournament by 24 strokes.
Showers, coming off a school-record 69 in the first round of the tournament, slipped to 78 in the final round and wound up in a three-way tie for first with Angela Gauck of Marian and Carrie Riordan of Eastern Illinois. Gauck then won medalist honors on the first playoff hole.
The Bulldogs pulled away from the field in the team competition, with four golfers finishing among the top six individuals. Senior Niki Garden claimed fourth place with rounds of 72 and 79 (151), while junior Lynnsey Showers finished fifth with scores of 77 and 76 (153). Senior Paige McCracken wound up sixth with rounds of 78 and 76 (154). Junior Ashlen Christie, Butler's fifth golfer, placed in a tie for 16th with scores of 87 and 76 (163).
Freshman Molly Fields topped Butler's non-scoring individuals and tied for 11th place. She carded rounds of 78 and 81 (159). Freshman Nicole Simon came in 15th with a total of 161 (83-78), while freshman Allison Lipps tied for 25th with scores of 88 and 78 (166). Freshman Marcella Moreman tied for 28th (84-85 169) and senior Amy Stafford came in 31st (88-83 171).
Butler's first round team score of 296 topped the previous school record of 297, set at the IPFW Fall Classic in 2005. Lauren Showers broke the single match scoring record of 71, held by her sister, Lynnsey, and Abby Seger.
