Freshmen Michele Nash and Clare Cornelius turned in team-best efforts and helped lead Butler to an eighth place team finish at the F & M Bank APSU Intercollegiate women's golf tournament, which wrapped up at Clarksville Country Club in Clarksville, Tenn., on Tuesday (Oct. 21). The Bulldogs rallied on the final day to climb five spots in the team standings.
Nash and Cornelius shot identical 36-hole scores of 17-over-par 161. Nash shot a team-best 82 in the opening round of the tournament, before closing with a 79 in the final round. Cornelius carded an 83 on the first day and a team-best 78 on the second day. The two first-year players tied for 25th place in the final individuals standings.
Molly Fields finished one stroke behind her teammates and tied for 29th place overall. She posted rounds of 83 and 79 for her 36-hole total of 162. Lauren Showers rebounded from a first day 88 to shoot a 79 in the final round and tie for 51st place at 167, while Nicole Simon shot rounds of 87 and 96 to finish in a tie for 83rd place at 183.
Marcell Moreman, playing as a non-scoring individual, finished 87th with rounds of 94 and 92 (186).
Butler stood 13th after shooting 335 on the first day of play, but the Bulldogs stormed back with a team score of 315 in the final round to pass five teams. Only four teams had a better final round score than Butler.
Tennessee Tech won the 17-team event with a two-day score of 620, two strokes better than runner-up Murray State. Lorie Warren of Belmont captured medalist honors with a 36-hole score of one-over-par 145.
