INDIANAPOLIS - Four Butler women's soccer players earned All-Horizon League honors this season. Senior midfielder Molly Kruger was named first team All-Horizon League while defenders Sarah Phelps and Abbie Kaul were each second-team honorees. Freshman forward Katie Griswold was selected to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team.
Kruger, a native of Carmel, Ind., garnered first-team honors for the second consecutive season. She leads the Bulldogs and ranks 5th in the Horizon League in points (16), totaling five goals and six assists on the season. She is tied for 2nd in the league in assists and her 53 shots is also 2nd in the conference.
Phelps and Kaul have been mainstays in the back for Butler.
Kaul, a native of Fredonia, Wis., is honored by the league office for her fourth straight year. She was also a second-team selection last year and was a first-teamer in 2007. As a freshman in 2006, Kaul was named to the league's all-newcomer team. Kaul scored three goals this season, including a pair of game-winning goals.
Phelps, an Indianapolis native, is a 3-year starter for Butler. This marks her first appearance on the all-league teams. Phelps scored four points (1g, 2a) this season.
Griswold, a freshman from Youngstown, Ohio, made an immediate impact for Butler this season. She tied Kruger with a team-leading five goals and had two game-winning goals. She was also among the Horizon League leaders in points (14, 7th in HL) and assists (4, 6th).
Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen and Helen Steinhauser were named the league's player of the year and newcomer of the year, respectively.
Butler opens play in the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship Sunday, Nov. 1 at Loyola. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. ET.
