INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Katie Griswold scored twice in the first half and senior Molly Kruger totaled four points to lead the Butler women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Detroit Friday afternoon. The match was Butler's home finale for the 2009 season.
Griswold found the net twice in a span of 86 seconds to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The first tally came in the 21st minute when Kruger sent a pass to the right side senior Lindsey Fox, who then found Griswold in the center of the box. Griswold chipped the ball into the lower right 90 for what would end up being the game-winner.
In the 23rd minute, Griswold scored on a header off a breakaway. Kruger and junior Sarah Phelps assisted on the play.
Kruger scored a goal of her own in the 48th minute, taking a long pass from sophomore Maite Bastyr and scoring 1v1 against the goalkeeper to put BU ahead 3-0.
Griswold and Kruger each now have a team-high five goals on the season. Kruger leads the team with 14 points (5g-4a).
Detroit's (3-9-1, 1-2-0 HL) Selena Stanski scored in the 78th minute for the final margin.
The match served as Senior Day for Butler's seven seniors: Morgan Cox, Lindsey Fox, Abbie Kaul, Kenzie Kokta, Molly Kruger, Angie Muir and Carrie Twyman.
"It was great for us to win on our Senior Day," head coach Tari St. John said. "Those seven young women have been tremendous members of our program. They have helped us establish a winning culture here at Butler, and it was nice to celebrate with them."
