INDIANAPOLIS - Butler scored three times in the second half - with two goals coming off the foot of senior Molly Kruger - as the Bulldog women's soccer team routed Green Bay, 3-0, Sunday at the Butler Bowl. The match was BU's Horizon League opener.
Kruger's two goals doubled her season total, while senior Lindsey Fox had a goal and an assist. Senior Carrie Twyman and freshman Katie Griswold each added an assist as Butler dominated play for all 90 minutes against the Phoenix (2-7-2, 0-2-1).
BU controlled the first 45 minutes, but couldn't score. The Bulldogs found their first goal at 50:34, when Fox played a ball to Kruger on the right side. Kruger went down the sideline and fired a shot off the post and into the net.
That was all the Dogs would need.
At 69:46, Twyman made a great run down the left sideline. Twyman, who had a shot off the crossbar earlier in the match, crossed to Fox who struck to give BU a 2-0 lead.
At 76:52, Kruger scored again. Griswold played to her on the right side. Kruger went 1-v-1 and beat the Green Bay defender, sending a hard shot from close range inside the far post.
Butler (5-7-0, 1-0-0 HL) had a 19-8 shots advantage. BU also commanded a 10-6 edge in shots on goal and 9-0 in corner kicks. BU goalkeeper Jessica Schein played 80:59, making four saves. Olivia Walter finished the shutout for the Bulldogs.
Kruger had a match-high five shots, four on goal. Senior Angie Muir had four shots and Twyman and Fox each had three.
Butler hosts defending league champion Milwaukee Friday, Oct. 2 at 4:30 p.m. The match will be BU's Breast Cancer Awareness Day, as the Bulldogs will honor a special guest.
NOTES: Kruger now has three multi-goal matches as a Bulldog. She scored twice against Detroit and Indiana last year. Kruger has 18 career goals, 15 coming at Butler...The shutout was Butler's third of the season and second at home...The Bulldogs finished 4-5-0 for the month of September.
