BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's Orianica Velasquez Herrera scored late in regulation to give No. 22 IU a 1-0 victory over the Butler women's soccer team Wednesday night. The Bulldogs played the Hoosiers to a scoreless tie until Velasquez Herrera found the net in the 79th minute.
The game-winner came right in front of the net off a rebound. After BU goalkeeper Jessica Schein made a save on a shot by IU's Liz Holby, Velasquez Herrera found the ball at her foot and scored from point-blank range.
BU (3-5-0) was able to threaten just a few moments after the goal, racking up three corner kick chances in a 98-second span. However, the Bulldogs couldn't find the net.
"We played great," head coach Tari St. John said. "If you can take away the emotion of the loss and objectively look at what transpired over 90 minutes, you have to be excited about what's in store for us the rest of the season."
IU (7-1-0) finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Mandi Kotynski and freshman Katie Griswold led the Bulldog attack with two shots each. Seniors Kenzie Kokta and Carrie Twyman each had one try.
Schein made five saves, tying her season high. She also stopped five shots at Toledo back on Sept. 6.
Butler will play twice more in the coming days, traveling to Xavier Friday, Sept. 18 and hosting Louisville Sunday, Sept. 20.
