INDIANAPOLIS - Milwaukee scored in the 20th minute and Butler played a very spirited second half but couldn't find the equalizer as the BU women's soccer team fell to UWM, 1-0, Friday at the Butler Bowl.
Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen, the Horizon League's leading scorer, found the net off a header at the 19:54 mark. Kate Megna and Keara Thompson assisted on the play.
BU (5-8-0, 1-1 HL) played its best soccer of the night after giving up the tally. Butler had several strong chances in the second half.
"I thought every player on the field tonight for us battled really hard," head coach Tari St. John said. "If we can play for 90 minutes how we played in the second half, we will be successful.
"There are many reasons why Milwaukee is the best team in our league. I give them a lot of credit."
The women's soccer program recognized Butler women's basketball head coach Beth Couture as part of its breast cancer awareness. Coach Couture flipped the coin joined the teams during pre-game. Also, BU women's soccer hall of famer Joy (Aschenbrenner) Sweeney was honored at halftime.
Butler returns to action Friday, Oct. 9 at home against Detroit. The match is this season's home finale and is BU's Senior Day.
