BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky's Megan Meinke scored in the 45th minute to give the Butler women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in its season opener Friday afternoon. Meinke's game-winning goal, a strike from the left side just outside the box, came at 44:35.
WKU's Kellie Walker and Chelsea Grover were each credited with an assist on the play.
"When a team scores right before the half, it really changes the game," BU head coach Tari St. John said. "I give Western Kentucky a lot of credit. We couldn't break them down in the second half."
Each team had seven shots and five tries on goal. Senior Molly Kruger led the Bulldogs on offense with three shots (two on goal). The Bulldog attack did result in a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
"We played unbelievable in the first 30 minutes, " St. John said. "I was pleased with our sense of effort. Unfortunately, we didn't put one away."
Junior Jessica Schein played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs, stopping four shots. The Hilltoppers halted all five of the Bulldogs' shots on goal.
Butler (0-1-0) returns to action Sunday, Aug. 23 against Purdue at the Butler Bowl at 1 p.m.
