CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon scored six goals in the match's first 30 minutes but the Butler women's soccer team made the most of the situation in a 6-1 loss to Oregon at Oregon State's Nike Invitational in Corvallis, Ore., Sunday afternoon.
OU's Kirstie Kuhns had a hat trick during a 11:49 span and three different Duck players had two assists as Oregon got ahead comfortably. The young Butler squad, which started six freshmen and two sophomores, regrouped and put up a positive second half.
Sophomore Katie Griswold beat the Oregon keeper for a goal at the 77:35 mark. Freshman Jackie Hafele assisted on the play. Butler had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks during the final period.
"We regrouped at halftime and committed to using this game to make us better," head coach Tari St. John said. "I was very proud of our second half effort.
"All in all, this weekend made us a better team. I'm looking forward to league play with this team."
Butler hosts two matches at the Butler Bowl this week. Oakland comes to BU Friday, Sept. 24 and the Dawgs open HL play against Wright State Sunday, Sept. 26.
