Bulldogs Edged Late In Double OT At Dayton
DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton's Colleen Williams scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute of play as the Butler women's soccer team dropped its season opener, 1-0, at Dayton's Bajuan Field.
Butler, kicking off its 20th season of varsity soccer, bent but didn't break through 90 minutes of regulation and the first overtime period. The Flyers, who are at least receiving votes in most national polls, had plenty of chances but the Dawgs made each stop deep into the second overtime.
"We defended and we were organized, we battled hard," head coach Tari St. John said. "We just gave up a counter attack in the 103rd minute. We found ourselves in a bad position defensively and they scored."
Williams' goal came when Juliana Libertin sent her a pass from the left side. Williams took the ball at the top of the box, made a move past a BU defender and finished. The goal came at 102:44.
St. John cited freshmen Olivia Colosimo and Nikki Hafele as two bright spots. Colosimo started in her collegiate debut and registered a team-high three shots. Sophomores Rachael Melendez and Katie Griswold each posted two shots.
"Dayton has a good team and this was a great test," St. John said. "We're never excited about a loss, but we're excited by what we saw tonight. We have freshmen who are not playing like freshmen. For us to have a successful season, that has to happen. So we are finding we have a lot players who can compete at this level."
BU (0-1-0) will play Wednesday, Aug. 25 at Xavier. BU's home opener is set for Friday, Aug. 27 vs. Indiana State.
