Bulldogs Drop 1-0 Contest At Xavier

BOX SCORE

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Xavier's Lauren Heap scored in the 26th minute and the Bulldogs couldn't find the equalizer as XU defeated the Butler women's soccer team, 1-0, Wednesday evening. Butler will try its fortune at home Friday, Aug. 27 vs. Indiana State.

The game-winner came on a corner kick play at 25:20. Leslie Boersma assisted on the goal.

The Bulldogs had several dangerous chances, most notably by freshman Olivia Colosimo and sophomore Rachael Melendez. Yet, Butler couldn't find the net for the second straight match.

"We've talked a lot so far as a team about defining roles for the team. And we're still looking for a goal scorer," head coach Tari St. John said. "We have a lot of potential and a lot of talented players, we just need to do something with that potential."

Play was mostly even for the evening, with both teams registering seven shots. Colosimo and Melendez each had three shots, two coming on goal.

St. John cited BU's defensive play as a positive, specifically senior Sarah Phelps and junior goalkeeper Olivia Walter. Walter made two saves and played all 90 minutes.

"It wasn't for a lack of effort. Our defense played well, and I thought Olivia did a nice job back there," St. John said. "We didn't give up anything on a counterattack. The only goal we gave up was on a corner kick."

"We played good soccer, we're just looking for a couple of players to fill some roles for us."

Butler's Friday home opener against ISU is set for 4 p.m. The Bulldogs then host Indiana Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. There will be an alumni match beginning at 10 a.m. CLICK HERE for more information.
