LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior Claire Milam scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute and the Butler women's soccer team defeated Kansas in overtime, 3-2. The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the exhibition victory.
After Kansas' Ingrid Vidal scored in the 68th minute to put Butler down 2-0, the Bulldogs stormed back. Freshman Elise Kotsakis found the net at 69:15 after a scramble in front of the goal. Down 2-1 late in regulation, Butler found the equalizer when freshman Lucy Chauvin scored at 85:14. Sophomore Nikki Hafele was credited with an assist.
In extra time, sophomore Jackie Hafele passed to Milam, who scored on a long shot about 27 yards out. The goal came at 93:14 and sent the Bulldogs home with a win.
The Bulldogs fired off 20 shots, with 11 of them on target. Kansas had 12 shots (5 on goal). Butler also had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Julie Burton played all 93:14 in goal, making two saves and earning a win. Freshman Kelly Mahoney and sophomore Ali Backscheider were the two players to stay on the field for all 93 minutes.
Butler, which was picked second in the Horizon League's preseason poll, will begin the 2011 regular season Friday, Aug. 19 at the Butler Bowl against Madonna University. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.
