At the beginning of each school year, the Butler women's soccer team is the first Bulldog squad to compete. Coming off a league championship season, Butler will play two exhibition road matches to start the 2011-12 athletics calendar.

Head coach Tari St. John, the 2011 Horizon League Coach of the Year, enters her sixth season with a young but talented team. The 2011 Butler squad has just one senior, but eight starters return from last year's team that went 6-2-0 in league play and was the No. 1 seed and hosted the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship.

Butler returns nine of the team's top 11 scorers (89.7% of the team's scoring) in addition to four players who garnered All-Horizon League recognition from last year's team. Junior Katie Griswold was second in the league with nine goals last year, while sophomore Jackie Hafele was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. Both players were voted first team All-Horizon League. Sophomores Nikki Hafele and Olivia Colosimo were each named to the league's all-newcomer team.

The Bulldogs are taking on IPFW in an exhibition match again after defeating the Mastodons, 1-0, back on Aug. 13 of last season. Sunday's exhibition contest at Kansas is BU's first meeting with the Jayhawks.

Butler will officially open the 2011 regular season Friday, Aug. 19 vs. Madonna at the Butler Bowl. Kickoff against the Crusaders is 5:30 p.m. ET. Fans can get updates, stories and photos on Butler women's soccer (@ButlerWSoccer) on Twitter HERE.
