In splitting two matches, the Butler women's soccer team made some strides as a team last weekend. The Bulldogs will try to keep the positive momentum this weekend when it hosts Eastern Michigan Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. at the Butler Bowl. Butler then travels to Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon.

Butler (2-2-0) picked up a road win last Friday night at Indiana State, with freshman Elise Kotsakis scoring the game-winner in the 68th minute. Butler had nearly twice as many shots (13-7) in the match, and doubled ISU in corner kicks (4-2). The goal was the first in the young career for Kotsakis, one of three freshmen who have scored a goal this season.

Playing perhaps its toughest opponent of the season last Sunday, Butler gave a great effort and had an early lead against No. 24 Oregon State. Junior Katie Griswold scored early in the match but Oregon State evened the scored 25 minutes later. The 1-1 tie lasted into overtime until the 95th minute, when OSU's Haley Shaw found the golden goal.

Juniors Rachael Melendez and Griswold are leading Butler in scoring. Melendez and Griswold each have two goals on the year, and Melendez has an assist for a team-best five points. Senior Natalie Galovska, the only senior on the team, has emerged as the starting goalkeeper. In two starts and 274 minutes, the senior owns a 1.64 goals against average.

Friday's opponent, Eastern Michigan (0-2-1), is winless but does own a 2-2 tie against Pittsburgh. EMU was blown out by Detroit, 4-0, and lost 2-1 in double overtime against IUPUI. Eastern Illinois 0-3-0 and will play at IUPUI before hosting Butler Sunday afternoon. EIU's losses have come to Northern Iowa, Missouri and Belmont.

After this weekend's matches, Butler will go to a two-match event at Kentucky Sept. 9-11. The Bulldogs will play Southeast Missouri State and Louisville.
