The Butler women's soccer team, winner of three of its last four, will travel to Kentucky to play in UK's Tropical Smoothie Invitational. BU opens the weekend Friday, Sept. 9 against SEMO and will play Louisville on Sunday.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-0-0 weekend with wins over Eastern Michigan and Eastern Illinois. Sophomore Jackie Hafele netted the game-winner on a header with 45 seconds left to lift the Dawgs over EMU 2-1. Freshman Stephanie Kaylor assisted on the play. Junior Rachel Scott also scored a goal in the victory.
Butler (4-2-0) started slow on Sunday at Eastern Illinois, but came back with a fury. Down 2-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs made some adjustments and found the net three times over a span of 15:07.
Sophomore Nikki Hafele scored on a header in the 54th minute and Butler then found the equalizer at 56:00 on a PK by junior Katie Griswold. In the 69th minute, freshman Elise Kotsakis buried the game-winner on what coach Tari St. John called "the best finish I've seen this year."
Griswold is leading the team and ranks ninth in the Horizon League in scoring with six points (3g-0a). She is tied for third in the league with 0.60 goals per game. Kotsakis has been one of the more active forwards in the conference, currently standing fourth in the HL with 3.00 shots per game.
Kentucky, the tourney host, is 5-0-0 heading into the weekend. The Wildcats will play Louisville and SEMO. BU's first opponent, SEMO, is 3-1-0 on the year and is coming off a 3-0 win at Evansville last weekend. Louisville enters the Kentucky tourney with a 1-3-1 mark against a treacherous schedule.
After this weekend's swing through Kentucky, the Dawgs will travel to Michigan for matches at Oakland and Detroit Sept. 16-18.
