NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second consecutive week, freshman Sophia Maccagnone has been named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week. Maccagnone was recognized after scoring both of Butler's goals in a 2-1 win over Youngstown State.
"Both of her goals this weekend were highlight-reel material," head coach Tari St. John said. "She's a special player and it's nice to know we will be seeing things like this from her for the next four years.
"Her first thought after Saturday's game was that it was great to help her team win on Senior Day. She's just a really neat kid."
Maccagnone, from Shelby Township, Mich., found the net in the fourth minute of BU's victory over former Horizon League foe YSU. She scored again in the 13th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. On the day, she totaled seven shots (five on goal).
Maccagnone is tied for the conference lead with seven goals this season. She is also among the conference leaders in shots and points. She has scored five goals in Butler's last three matches, all Bulldog victories.
Butler (6-3-1) will begin its first season of A-10 play when it hosts Saint Louis this weekend at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs and Billikens take the pitch Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
