Butler Women’s Soccer Faces Challenging 2013 Slate

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- A new conference, several NCAA Tournament teams and some traditional rivals add up to a challenging 2013 schedule for the Butler women's soccer team, which opens fall practice on Wednesday, August 7.  The team, under ninth-year head coach Tari St. John, will face a 19-match, regular season slate, including eight contests in the Butler Bowl.

The Bulldogs, who set a team record for fewest losses in a season (5) a year ago, are changing conferences for the second consecutive year.  Butler finished with a 12-5-4 overall record, a 5-1-3 conference record and a tie for third place in the league tournament in its lone season in the Atlantic 10 Conference last fall.  Ahead is the challenge of the new BIG EAST, featuring NCAA Tournament teams Marquette and Georgetown.

Butler will open the 2013 season at Louisville on August 23, before making a trip to Indiana State two days later.  The match at Indiana State will be the first of three road contests in Indiana.  Butler will visit IPFW on Sept. 2 and IUPUI on Sept. 22.  Other non-conference road matches for the Bulldogs will be at Bowling Green (Aug. 31) and at Wright State (Sept. 18).

The Bulldogs, who host Ball State in an exhibition contest on Aug. 16, will play the first of eight regular season home matches on Wednesday, August 28, against Northern Kentucky.  That initial home contest will start at 7 p.m. (ET) in the Butler Bowl.

The home schedule includes two foes who won matches in last year's NCAA Tournament.  Michigan, which lost a match on penalty kicks to #1 seed and eventual national finalist Penn State on in the Round of 16, visits the Butler Bowl on Sept. 15, while Georgetown, which advanced to the second round before falling to #3 seed Baylor, will be the first BIG EAST foe to visit Butler.  The Hoyas come to Indianapolis for a 7 p.m. (ET) contest on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Also headed to Indianapolis this year are Seattle (Sept. 6), Eastern Michigan (Sept. 8), St. John's (Oct. 6), Providence (Oct. 12) and Xavier (Oct. 20).

The Bulldogs will begin BIG EAST play at Villanova on Sept. 26, before visiting Seton Hall on Sept. 29.  Conference road matches at DePaul (Oct. 17) and Creighton (Oct. 26) precede the final regular season match at defending BIG EAST champ Marquette on Nov. 2.  Marquette advanced to the final 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament, before dropping a match on penalty kicks to #1 seed BYU.

The BIG EAST Championship will begin on Nov. 5.
