Women’s Soccer Opens Butler's 2013-14 Athletic Year
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- The women's soccer team will kickoff Butler's 2013-14 athletic year when it hosts Ball State in an exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 16. The 6:30 p.m. contest will be played in the Butler Bowl and admission is free.
Butler is coming off a 12-5-4 season that included a berth in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. The Bulldogs set a team record for fewest losses (5) in a season, while matching the third-highest single season win total (12) in school annals. The team's 12 wins were the most since 2002.
Head coach Tari St. John, entering her eighth season at Butler's helm, has her top six scorers back from last season, including All-Mid-Atlantic Region performer Sophia Maccagnone. The 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, Maccagnone led the Bulldogs with 11 goals last fall, including six game-winning scores.
In addition to Maccagnone, the Bulldogs boast 12 other players who saw action in 15 or more matches last fall. Included in that group are A-10 All-Academic performer Kelly Mahoney and senior goalkeeper Julie Burton, who compiled a school-record 0.69 goals against average.
Ball State posted an 8-7-5 record and year ago. The Cardinals return junior forward Nicole Pembleton, who led the team in scoring in 2012, as well as second-leading scorer Jasmine Moses.
Butler will open the regular season at Louisville on Friday, Aug. 23. The Bulldogs' first regular season home match will be against Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
